Applied Shotokan by Andy Allen
Canada
Приєднався 3 вер 2016
Shotokan, a Japanese style of karate, is far removed from its Okinawan roots. Shotokan kata applications are typically practiced at long range and are, by nature, very impractical. Karate is supposed to be more than kicking, punching and blocking for sport. Historically, the purpose of kata was to summarize two person drills already established and not meant for showcasing arbitrary aesthetic criteria as determined by competitive organizations. 'Applied Shotokan' features videos that highlight practical kata bunkai incorporating throws, joint locks, limb clearing, choking and striking, all from close range. You can also find videos on pad drills, vlogs, and karate workouts.

Kata-Based Grappling Flow Drill
This drill shows defence against an over-arm front bear hug. You'll see small pieces of kata represented in this drill including Hangetsu (frame of the hips to create space), Heian Godan (o goshi), the crane stance/tsuru-dachi found in Gankaku (imobilizing uke's upper body) and juji uke (kimura lock/double wrist lock) which is found in many katas.
Critics may say that this is just jiujitsu. I say that the various styles of martial arts are not islands. I learned this variation of o goshi in BJJ. I learned the kimura from a karate instructor. The martial arts are not separate entities with no overlap. If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck then it must be a duck!

Check out these highlights from a recent kyu test. Chen trains at my dojo, Nova Karate Jutsu. His test covered, ukime, kata (Heian Nidan and heian Sandan), kihon, pad drills, bunkai, tegumi & kumite drills, nage waza (throws), newaza (ground fighting), knife defense, and several rounds of sparring. These rounds covered kumite, throws, ground fighting, and "all-in", where strikes, throws and gro...

Technical Stand-Up for Self Defence

All karate-ka (in fact, all strikers) should know how to get back to their feet after getting pushed down or knocked down. In this video, I borrow BJJ's technical stand-up. I teach this to my beginner students. The distance between you and your enemy will dictate whether this is the right way to return to your feet. In the video, I do a complete breakdown of the movements as well and outline tw...
Fusion of Two Grappling Drills

In this impromptu video, I combine two grappling drills I learned from two different Japanese Jujitsu instructors; Ray McKinnon and Chris Michaels. DRILL 1: The first starts standing with pummeling. Get a whizzer when your partner gets the underhook. Step out and crank the elbow. From there, do a takedown to side control. DRILL 2: Once your partner frames on your hip, pinch his arm with your kn...

Kata Bunkai Rule #3. Enemies & Angles
Переглядів 1,6 тис.5 місяців тому
Kata is not meant for defense against multiple opponents. Kenwa Mabuni was very clear on this. There is one enemy and he is in front of you. The angles in kata do not represent the direction the enemy is attacking from. Instead, they represent the angle you want in relation to your enemy to give you a tactical advantage. In this video, I discuss the passage written by Mabuni that addresses thes...

I found this explanation so helpful. Thank you Sensei.
shuto uke einer sehr schönes technike.ich liebe diese technik..
Hello Sensei. How are your? Sensei, once, in a podcast with other two senseis, you mentioned that the "traditional" kihon is a little bit unrealistic, therefore I'd like to know if all these flow drills that you show in your videos could be considered as a Kihon. Thanks in advance. Greetings from Brazil João Pedro Melo Silva
I use the term kihon for solo movements. In the JKA and other Shotokan organizations, kihon is don't in long stances with hikite. My kihon is more "free flowing".
Very intelligent analysis. Regarding adherence to dogma, my Shotokan senior Caylor Adkins wryly advised us, "Now let's all pretend we won't burn in hell if our rear heal comes up..." Regarding rotation: Penetrating body mass works by itself; rotation without mass shift, not so much. That said, basic training imparts fundamental body mechanics that have great value as one progresses to fighting, in much the same manner as the playing of scales forms a foundation for the most avant-garde jazz... Coltrane and Miles didn't skip this basic training --- they transcended it. I take your message to be that we should take basics as a starting point, not a final solution.
Thanks for commenting. The main take-away from this video is that there are many ways to generate power. Hip Rotation is one of them. Unfortunately, may Shotokan sensei overlook these other factors.
I am also a Shotokan instructor. Have a dojo in Quebec Canada and I share your views in terms of providing a more well rounded form or training. Nage waza and ne waza are so important and are part of my curriculum as well. I would be interested in connecting with you.
That's fantastic. If you're ever in Nova Scotia, be sure to visit my dojo..Nova Karate Jutsu
Karate has Improved from the mid 1980’s. Not all schools are as advanced as yours. Sport Karate is still the main stream, seems to me as the students get older many show more interest in “Old School” karate.
Nice work guys 👊
Awesome. Excellent tutorial I've been watching so many on UA-cam Your details and different angles of each move is a big help thank you. Domo arigato
Phenomenal Sensei!!!!! Osu!!!!!
Thank you 🙏
Eccellente!
Very nicely broken down, thank you from Scotland.
Dogi, keikogi, or {art name}gi, NEVER just, "gi The proper form if there is no prefix is "ki" as i KImono.
That doesn't really concern me. Thanks for your comment.
@@AppliedShotokan, the simple thing then is to use English rather than incorrectly other languages and, probably, bellyache when calling support lines when the helper cannot speak without accented English? The info is for any person who wants to speak Japanese correctly and respectfully rather than poorly and colloquially. 🙂

Love this bunkai and that's a great pad drill to add some power and build up that muscle memory. Thank you for another great video.
I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for commenting.
Hello Sensei. How are you? Sensei, where can I find these Kenwa Mabuni's quotes? Are these quotes from a book? Thanks in advance. Greetings from Brazil!!
Not sure of the original source. I have a link in the description.
I watched it five times, and now i understand🤩
random question Andy- do you know of any full contact bare knuckle point karate? kind of like the JKA of the 70s and earlier (or Karate Kid movies I suppose). Just curious. I don't ask because I'm a tough dude by any means, but because bare knuckle is arguably safer than gloves for full contact with the idea (hope) being nobody wants to throw a reckless hook punch with their bare knuckles. Being point style, there's less worry about repeated injury
Nice
Oss!
So helpful ❤
I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for commenting.
I am somewhat perplexed at this, since Naka Sensei of the JKA, has trained in Okinawa and China with instructors of other styles, and even trained with pro boxers. The videos are readily available on UA-cam for anyone who cares to look, by either searching his name or Kuro Obi World. (I'd love to train with him!).
I guess it's okay for Naka to branch out but not for anyone else?
tHAt’S NoT kARaTe!!! No but seriously great video!
Andy, I love the test! Your student did a great job! That was an intense test! I do have a question. For Kihon, do you have specific combos that they train for the test or do you come up with a combo on the fly that they have to perform? Is it the same combos each test or do they change?
Thanks for your comment! I do have specific combos that are assigned to each rank. That's said, I will sometimes deviate from the curriculum on the fly soon as I think it's fair to the student. I'm not going to ask a student to do something I don't think they're ready for.
Great video! I started watching because I found you through Iain Abernathy. You have some great videos. The one criticism I have for this specific flow is the start. He is bear hugging you outside of your arms. You have the inside arm position. Outside bear hugs are a horrible position to be in. I would like to know your thoughts.
I borrowed the throw from the outside bear hug from Gracie Combatives. What is it you don't like about it?
@@AppliedShotokan I think all of the technical aspects were spot on. I’m just wondering why not bear hug them. You have the inside position with your arms because he is bear hugging with his arms outside of yours. That is all. As a drill to learn skills, I really like it. Just the initial attack is not. Also I really like your channel and appreciate your approach to karate.
@@TheShawnShow3 ok, I see. Once they have a grip it's seems impossible to pummel inside.
Great video!!
Thank you!
Thank you coach. Hello from turkey.
Nice work! Congratulations, Chen!
Congratulations Chen. Andy top class karate-jutsu you are producing.
You gave a very thorough test. I see your Shotokan covers all aspects of Karate. I was rooting for your student especially at the end. Your channel helps others to see that Karate is practical for self defense. Keep up the great work Sensei Andy. I look forward to your next video. 🥋👊🏽
Thanks so much for your comment!
Thanks for your comment!
@@AppliedShotokan You’re welcome.
amazing kumite spirit and technique from the white belt
I always thought of the Kōsa-dachi alongside the following Kiba-dachi as a suggestion to get side on if possible, as the former wants to corkscrew, and the latter is strong side on. Of course the kata also lends itself quite nicely to the clinch, but the Kōsa-dachi always seemed a bit of an overlooked enigma, so thanks for the insight.
Congratulations to Chen! & congratulations to you sir for developing such a fine curriculum and drawing it out of your students. I hope they know what a treasure they have with you. 🥋🙇🏻♂️🙏
Thanks so much. Your comment means a lot to me 😊
Strongly agree on all accounts!
Wow! Greatest respect to Chen. I am really scared what he will have to face in his blue belt exam. This is far more Martial Arts Skill than I had with 3rd Dan Shotokan Karate - VERY FAR MORE!
It more than I did for my 7th dan test!
I made it to about 1/2 of the full test, battery died. This sum’s it up nicely. Great test, he earned it!
Great video. Andy have you thought about designing T shirts or other merchandise for sale?
It's on my very long to-do list!
@@AppliedShotokan I believe that it would be successful if you ever do it. T shirts, coffee mugs, and cups.
Fue muy satisfactorio ver que el examen que dió fue con un número reducido de estudiantes para poder brindar un mejor feedback, mis felicitaciones más sinceras! Realmente usted y su forma de ver el karate shotokan me inspiran.
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment!
ne waza in shotokan.... Awesome 👌 👏
I'm filling in the gaps!
@@AppliedShotokan yes well done, thez a few holes that need filling and your doing a grate job, now if l can get sensei to follow that would be just great 👍 You can take a horse to water but........
Just to say that I really appreciate the practical, deep but down to earth approach of your videos. Your students are lucky. Keep ‘em coming!
Thank you so much for your comment!
I'll be honest, I'm not impressed with a lot of Shotokan karate I've seen on UA-cam. Very often it looks watered down, and a little more than a game. Your group though, you push your students a lot harder than I normally see in Shotokan, well done! Awesome to see some ground game in there to. A little ground game goes a long way in being well rounded.
Thanks for your comment. I have abandoned most of the Shotokan training methodology and have filled the obvious gaps with what I have learned cross training. The kyu tests I did as I went through the Shotokan ranks were your basic kihon, kata, and step sparring. The tests only took a few minutes vs the 2-hr tests I run now. Cheers.
I like that you seem to give everyone a lot of individual time during belt tests. The gradings I did as a kid were like a production line...
That's the beauty of having small numbers. I'm not testing 50 people at once. I can run a proper belt test and give feedback if I feel it's needed.
Love this! This is my favorite kata!
Domo! Very helpful as always
Fantastic breakdown. Iain A's applications are great but this is the breakdown newbies to bunkai need.
After teaching this to beginners for a few years, I was seeing the same mistakes over and over. It's mainly the newbies I was thinking of when I filmed this. Thanks for commenting.
Domo! Osu!

Thanks for the breakdown, Andy. Marty.
Thanks, Marty.
- There's legions of combat sports enthusiasts, convinced that "only their stuff works", and by "works" they mean: in EVERY context; consensual, non-consensual, on the street, on the moon... All the rest is BS -There's legions of traditional martial arts and/or military methods fun-boys, defending their ultra-deadly martial art against any sort of criticism, reasonable or not. - And then, there is this great master, approaching his martial art with pragmatism and modesty, saying: "OK, let's borrow this method from another combat sport" cause it has relevance for the methods he is teaching and the context for which said methods apply. This the quintessence of what every dojo / gym / training context should do: building bridges, find similarities, appreciate differences, cooperate and borrow from each other. Absolute love. I regret living in a different continent than this gym
That has to be one of the most meaningful compliments I have ever received. Thank you so much!
Excellent bunkai, simple and very effective. Great demonstration as well. Thank you!
I have seen some form of a stand-in base or technical stand-up in traditional martial arts, including karate and gung fu. It was more widely taught in self defenses from the 1990s and before. I also believe that some salutes, done at the beginning of forms and katas is a frame or some type of cover crash, similar to the Spear System.
An important skill to work on for sure. Great lesson and channel. Your content is awesome! Thank you
